Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the current version of Google Analytics. It replaced Universal Analytics, which stopped processing data in 2023. Your Bibliopolis website sends ecommerce activity to GA4 automatically, so you can see which traffic sources actually produce sales.
Before you start
Two settings need to be in place on the Google Analytics settings page of your admin. In the new BookRouter admin this is the Analytics & Marketing Tags page; in the legacy Control Panel it is Google Analytics under Settings:
- Your GA4 Measurement ID is entered. It looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX and can be found in your Google Analytics account under Admin > Data streams.
- The Ecommerce option is set to on.
With those set, your website reports shopping activity to GA4 automatically, including when a visitor views an item, adds it to their cart, begins checkout, and completes a purchase. Unlike the old Universal Analytics, GA4 has no "Enable Ecommerce" switch to flip on the Google side: the ecommerce reports fill in on their own once your site starts sending purchase data.
Viewing your sales in Google Analytics
Log in to your Google Analytics account at analytics.google.com.
Navigate to Reports > Monetization > Overview for total revenue and transaction counts, or Reports > Monetization > Ecommerce purchases for a per-item breakdown. Use the date selector in the upper right to choose the period you want to review.
Seeing which sources produce revenue
Navigate to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Change the primary dimension (the dropdown above the first column of the table) to Session source / medium, then look at the revenue column toward the right of the table. To see campaign names, choose Session campaign as the dimension instead, or add it as a secondary dimension with the + button.
Bibliopolis automatically adds Google tracking codes to the links in the emails and feeds it generates for you, so revenue from those features is attributed to the right source. Below is a list of the common sources you will see:
| Source | Medium | Campaign |
|---|---|---|
| direct | none | |
| organic | ||
| bing | organic | |
| constantcontact | newsletter | |
| viaLibri | organic | MetaSearchEngine |
| website | cartreminder | |
