New York: Selmar Hess, 1892. Quarto [30 cm] 3/4 dark brown leather with brown cloth covered boards and decorative gilt stamped titles and designs on the spine and front cover. Marbled endsheet. Good. The extremities are rubbed and gently faded. The underlying boards are exposed at the corners. There is a 2 inch crack in the front board at the foot of the joint. This crack continues into a 2 inch surface tear in the leather of the spine. The leather at the spine ends is a bit chipped. There are numerous small light stains on the covers. Depicting a surprisingly calm looking Louis XVI being seized by two ruffians, one of whom brandishes a sword, with a large mob carrying spears and bayonets in the background. John Sartain (1808-1897) was among the most successful and prolific engravers of his day; he brought mezzotint engraving to the US. During the 1840s he was producing engravings at the rate of one plate every two weeks; his lifetime output has been estimated at 1,500 plates. 61/2 x 10".  more information
