A few pencil notes, wrappers tanned at spine, with shallow chips at spine ends; a good copy. A preliminary private version of Herbert 2136, with a special preface re: justification and methodology. The wrapper title asserts the text embodies "the Labours of Many Eminent English and Greek Scholars," and Herbert identifies the editors as Samuel Lloyd and George Washington Moon. The edition described in Herbert is "tentative" and has a different collation; an earlier partial proof appeared in 1902 (see D&M 1348). Bound in Victorian black morocco, with blind stamped with extensive decoration to front and rear boards, central decorative motif surrounded by intricate panelling; with raised bands and gilt titles to spine, and further decorative blind tooling; all edges gilt, with additional gilt decoration to edges of boards, and gilt dentelles. Includes seven handcoloured engraved maps and bookseller's ticket. Binding is tight and the gilt is bright: consequently it shows very well with only minor shelfwear. Double page chronological chart and 9 colour maps. Binding slightly rubbed at extremities, otherwise a very attractive copy. The preliminaries are complete in spite of the publisher's erratic pagination.  more information

Bound in black morocco, blind stamped with intricate panelling to front and rear boards; with raised bands and gilt titles to spine, and further decorative blind tooling; all edges gilt, with additional gilt decoration to edges of boards, and gilt dentelles. Binding is tight, with some rubbing to hinges. Internally clean, free from foxing; one page of family register used. Dated 1854 by gift inscription in preliminaries - earliest entry in family register dated 1822. Includes loose blue ribbon and needlepoint book mark.  more information
