1898 2 Cabinet Card Photographs of United States Army Spanish American War Troops Being Transported from Ships at Montauk, Long

(Spanish American War)

Southampton, New York: Corwith's Pharmacy, 1898 2 sepia-tone photographs; particularly poignant, of 4 men in military garb carrying a stretcher with man aboard with pillow cradling his head, walking along a planked way between rails - which lead back to a troop carrier ship at dock (identified only from the funnel number '23' - a double-masted steam-sailer, single funnel visible midship) - bystanders watching the movement, soldiers lounging on shore, others at deck railings; (with) a shoreline image, foreground having several cloth-covered ambulance wagons, with a group of women and men in attendance, workers helping unload - in mid-ground is the Moran tug-boat Alfred W. Booth, which had been transferred to the U.S. Navy at this time and renamed the 'Massasoit' - the old name still visible here on the bow and deck-house and with several other transport steam ships in background - all boats at very temporary-looking shoreline docking facilities; images 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" size, mounted to beveled & gilt-edged cards at 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" overall; both with the publisher's notation of "....From...Corwith's Pharmacy, Southampton, N.Y." at bottom edge of mount; evidently this event, the quarantining of troops at Camp Wikoff in Montauk in 1898, was of great local interest and Corwith's took advantage of this by selling the imagery - and perhaps helped also with medicaments for the military - over 300 female nurses were at one time employed at the camp; no other photographer or studio noted; some spotting and foxing to the mounts, one with closed cut at top edge; images very good overall and are interesting U.S. military, Spanish American War, Montauk Long Island history imagery; Camp Wikoff hosted 29,000 soldiers including Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War, to quarantine for fevers and other tropical diseases before the troops could be sent to their homes. Very Good.

1925 Pathe Newsreel of the Inauguration of Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States

(Calvin Coolidge)

New Jersey: Pathe Film, 1925 Film in 35mm; with the Pathe Exchange Inc. markings on the edge of the film; pre-sound film, visual only; We infer from the following information that our film differs from the British version of the filming of the inauguration by Pathe since by this time, Pathe U.S. had been sold: "... Created by Pathe Freres of France in 1908, this form of film (the newsreel) was a staple of the typical movie fare in North American, British, and Commonwealth venues that was shown in theaters prior to the feature film. In the United States, beginning in 1914, (with) the company's film production studios in New Jersey... In 1923, Pathé sold its United States motion picture production arm which a few years later came under the control of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. who made it part of RKO Pictures. In 1927 they sold their British studios to Eastman Kodak while maintaining the theater and distribution arm..."; (online reference on the history of the company Pathe); film appears to be flexible on the reel, not brittle or decaying; no telltale 'vinegar' acetic acid odor, perhaps because it has been well-ventilated, not stored in metal film canister; in very good condition and interesting U.S. Presidential ephemeral material and especially for the presidency of Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) thirtieth president of the United States. 194x: Architecture, Planning, and Consumer Culture on the American Home Front

Shanken, Andrew Michael

University of Minnesota Press,

From the Publisher:

During the Second World War, American architecture was in a state of crisis. The rationing of building materials and restrictions on nonmilitary construction continued the privations that the profession had endured during the Great Depression. At the same time, the dramatic events of the 1930s and 1940s led many architects to believe that their profession—and society itself—would undergo a profound shift once the war ended, with private commissions giving way to centrally planned projects. The magazine Architectural Forum coined the term “194X” to encapsulate this wartime vision of postwar architecture and urbanism.

In a major study of American architecture during World War II, Andrew M. Shanken focuses on the culture of anticipation that arose in this period, as out-of-work architects turned their energies from the built to the unbuilt, redefining themselves as planners and creating original designs to excite the public about postwar architecture. Shanken recasts the wartime era as a crucible for the intermingling of modernist architecture and consumer culture.

Challenging the pervasive idea that corporate capitalism corrupted the idealism of modernist architecture in the postwar era, 194X shows instead that architecture’s wartime partnership with corporate American was founded on shared anxieties and ideals. Business and architecture were brought together in innovative ways, as shown by Shanken’s persuasive reading of magazine advertisements for Revere Copper and Brass, U.S. Gypsum, General Electric, and other companies that prominently featured the work of leading progressive architects, including Louis I. Kahn, Eero Saarinen, and Walter Gropius.

Although the unexpected prosperity of the postwar era made the architecture of 194X obsolete before it could be built and led to its exclusion from the story of twentieth-century American architecture, Shanken makes clear that its anticipatory rhetoric and designs played a crucial role in the widespread acceptance.

About the Author: Andrew M. Shanken is assistant professor of architectural history at the University of California, Berkeley. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Art Bulletin, Design Issues, Landscape, Places and Planning Perspectives.
